The iconic astromech droid R2-D2joins Hasbro’s Star Wars: The Black Series collection in a version inspired by the 1985 animated series Star Wars: Droids. This edition recreates his retro look with colourful, stylised detailing directly inspired by the cartoon.

The figure recreates R2-D2’s distinctive cylindrical silhouette, with its silver dome, white body and blue panels. The deliberately simplified finishes evoke the graphic style of the animated series, whilst retaining the numerous mechanical details that make the character instantly recognisable.

Designed in the 15 cm scale of the Black Series range, the figurine features several points of articulation allowing the dome, feet and various moving parts to be adjusted. It can therefore be displayed in a variety of poses evoking his movements and technical interventions.

R2-D2 comes with seven accessories, including several tools and mechanical appendages that can be attached to his body. A plastic collector’s piece, engraved with the character’s name and portrait, completes the set and pays homage to the classic figures inspired by the animated series.

Character background and universe (Lore)

R2-D2 is an astromech droid designed to carry out maintenance, navigation and repairs on spacecraft. Despite his small size and his language consisting of electronic beeps, he stands out for his intelligence, courage and ability to take the initiative when his companions are in danger.

Throughout the Star Wars saga, R2-D2 plays a part in several major events in galactic history. In particular, he serves aboard Queen Amidala’s ship, accompanies Anakin Skywalker during the Clone Wars, and later joins the Rebel Alliance alongside Princess Leia Organa.

His body contains numerous tools and devices: mechanical arms, a computer interface, holographic projectors and repair equipment. These functions enable him to open doors, hack into systems, repair ships or transmit crucial information.

R2-D2 forms an inseparable duo with the protocol droid C-3PO. C-3PO’s cautious, talkative and often pessimistic nature contrasts with R2-D2’s boldness and independence. Despite their regular arguments, the two droids share a deep loyalty and have weathered several generations of galactic conflict together.

The animated series *Star Wars: Droids*, which aired from 1985, recounts some of their adventures prior to the events of *Star Wars: A New Hope*.
